国際女性の地位協会は

女性差別撤廃条約の研究・普及を通じて、女性の地位向上を図る団体です。
1987年設立、1998年に国連経済社会理事会の協議資格を取得し、四半世紀を超えて活動しています。

This organization aims to promote the advancement of women's status through the study and dissemination of the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW).
Established in 1987, it obtained consultative status with the United Nations Economic and Social Council in 1998 and has been active for over a quarter of a century.

国際女性の地位協会の役割

国際女性の地位協会(JAIWR)は、ナイロビ世界女性会議(1985年)の参加者が中核になって、1987年9月20日に誕生しました。1998年に、国連経済社会理事会の協議資格を得た「国連ＮＧＯ」です。いま、30余年の歴史の上に、ジェンダー平等をめざす他団体とも連携して、活発に活動を続けています。

　初代会長：伊東すみ子、2代会長：赤松良子、現在の会長は、3代目の山下泰子です。

　JAIWRは、女性差別撤廃条約の研究・普及を目的としており、国連と日本女性の懸け橋になりたいと思っています。そこで、国連女性差別撤廃委員会(CEDAW)に、特別の関心をもっています。とりわけ、CEDAWで、日本における条約の実施状況が審議される折には、欠かさず傍聴し、NGOの意見をCEDAWに届けてきました。

　2003年、2009年、2016年の日本レポート審議には、日本女性差別撤廃条約NGOネットワーク（JNNC）の仲間たちと共同行動をとり、ニューヨークやジュネーブでの審議を傍聴し、審議後は、CEDAWの総括所見が国内でしっかり履行されるようウォッチしています。

　人権条約の実効性は何といっても、NGOのモニターなしには、確保できませんから。

The Japan Association for International Women's Rights (JAIWR) was established on September 20, 1987, by participants of the Nairobi World Conference on Women (1985). In 1998, it gained consultative status with the United Nations Economic and Social Council, becoming a "UN NGO." Building on its over 30-year history, the organization continues to engage actively in collaboration with other groups working toward gender equality.

The founding president was Sumiko Ito, followed by the second president, Ryoko Akamatsu. The current and third president is Yasuko Yamashita.

JAIWR's mission is to study and promote the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW) while serving as a bridge between the United Nations and Japanese women. As such, the organization maintains a strong focus on the UN Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW). In particular, JAIWR has consistently observed and provided input during CEDAW's reviews of Japan's implementation of the convention.

In 2003, 2009, and 2016, JAIWR collaborated with members of the Japan NGO Network for the CEDAW (JNNC) to observe the deliberations on Japan's reports in New York and Geneva. Following these sessions, JAIWR has been monitoring to ensure that CEDAW's concluding observations are effectively implemented in Japan.

The effectiveness of human rights treaties ultimately relies on the vigilant monitoring by NGOs. Without such efforts, accountability cannot be ensured.
